UPDATE: Syfy has ordered an additional Season 5 episode! This 13th episode, airing in 2012 with the rest of Season 5, will be the series finale. We're excited to give the show -- and all you fans -- a satisfying ending. Read more about it on Blastr.
* * *
As you may have heard, Syfy has decided that Season 5 will be the final season of Eureka. Here's their official statement:
"After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka. But Eureka is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012."
And here are a few words from Executive Producer and Co-Creator Jaime Paglia:
Heartfelt thanks to all our Eureka fans for the incredible support. You're the reason we do what we do. It has been a privilege. We hope to be able to give you, the characters, and Eureka a proper send-off. We're doing all we can to make that happen. But whatever happens, you have a season and a half of fantastic new episodes to come through next year. It only gets better. All my thanks to our amazing cast, crew and creative team for their phenomenal work on these 76 episodes of Eureka. You're the best.
There's been some confusion about what this means -- Eureka is NOT going off the air this year. There are still five more episodes in Season 4.5 this summer, an amazing new Christmas episode airing in December, and 12 more episodes in Season 5 that will air next year and are some of the best yet.
Thank you all again for your support over the years. We'll have more details soon.
I still say we should take Eureka to the big screen. Of course, we is you guys. :D

This is very upsetting, but at least there's time for a proper send-off. Keep rocking it!

yikes. this is by far my favorite show on tv. the science fiction channel-- now with more wrestling!

Well, now that SciFi is now SyFi and have replaced all their good scifi shows (sic SGx) with wrestling and other crap, I guess it's time to stop watching this once great channel.

This is a very bad decision by the network. This is my favorite show, one of the very few I really look forward to. If they respected the show's audience & creators, they would give adequate time to write an appropriate conclusion. Doing it this way is disrespectful to everyone involved.

Of course we don't want Eureka to die. But besides we don't want Eureka to live what happened to Lost and all these shows that survived a little bit too long and gave us bad feelings about their last episodes. The season 4.5 is truly amazing, and the 5th will surely be too. Thx to all the crew for what you do !

This makes it sound like they're going to need to scramble to get a series finale in place, which would make sense since production on season five has been taking place for a while. Good luck to everyone on the show in making this happen!

I don't have Syfy, but the fiance and I have been watching Eureka almost non-stop on Netflix for the past few weeks. I'm saddened to hear that there won't be too many more episodes to watch.

@Ftouchard - Lost had a totally different issue. Their storyline was a specific length begin middle and end, but the network then waffled on how many seasons they were going to run the whole thing. That is what created the weird middle portion that didn't seem to flow right with the rest of the story. The writers couldn't continue the storyline, not knowing how many more seasons they had to tell it in. Eureka is different than that, in that each episode is a story of its own, with a looser, long running storyline that has, I mean, had no specific end.

Well now I'm just sad. :-( I will really miss this show. But I am glad we get season 5. I do agree with Ftouchard that I don't want it to just fizzle out at the end. At least they have time to figure out a fitting ending.

The Syfy Channel is turning into total twaddle, all they seem to want to show is crap knock off films based on blockbusters.
All the good shows like Eureka seem to be getting cancelled.
Come on Syfy get your act together.

So heartbroken to hear this! This has been a show that our entire family has been able to enjoy from the beginning--and there are SO few shows on TV about which I can make that claim. It is the show that turned us on to the network formerly known as Sci-Fi (well before the days of wrestling and ridiculous programming.) Your team has done a phenomenal job of writing and entertaining--kudos to you and your talen will be greatly missed! As for us, once Eureka is gone, so it our "SyFy" watching. Looking forward to another great season though!

This is one of the few shows that I get excited when I know Tivo has recorded a new episode. You will be sorely missed!!

Syfy is now officially a joke of a network.
They hold off on showing S4.5, they screw over the Hulu viewers just to cancel the best show on TV.
I think they were trying to ruin the fan base- obviously that didn't work.
Once Eureka is done I will NEVER tune in to syfy again,
They've lost my viewership.

There are only a couple of weeks left of filming in Canada, so I'm sure the scripts are already in place. If anyone can pull of a major re-write, I know Jamie and our writers can get it done!!
It's too bad they didn't at least get the six episodes to do it justice.
Again, thanks for everything, guys. I know it's "just a tv show," but it feels like I'm losing my friends. You'll be missed!

I still think the bean counters at SyFy channel should go out and get a brain scan! They might find out how empty headed they are! Your average Eureka viewer is intelligent! Most of SyFy's viewing audience is! But they must be hoping for more WWE viewers! Certainly would be cheaper to produce! Trade intelligence for banging people on a canvas! The Almighty buck rules over creativity!

The SciFi Channel used to be on almost all the time at my house. Then they started with the 'reality' shows and wrestling, became SyFy and now Eureka & WH13 are the only things I watch there. One more show to go and I'll never watch that channel again. I'll miss you, Eureka!

Yeah, what the hell is happening to SyFy? Eureka is great, as another commenter said, something both me and my kids enjoy - the entire production staff deserve a heap of praise for their work. I enjoy some of the cheesy b-movies, but their programming choices continue to astound me. They routinely kill off great shows to pump out more and more ghost/UFO/Bigfoot hunting crap (several years of dedicated effort, and I think the Ghost Hunters saw a teddy bear fall over by itself on camera one time - and they hear SPOOKY NOISES) and I have no idea how the wrestling BS fits in - dump all that idiotic garbage, and focus on your core brand: SCIENCE FICTION. Maybe then y'could keep Eureka afloat.

If "[t]he 2012 episodes are some of the best we’ve seen", then why did they have "to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of Eureka"? It seems to me that they're saying the show is still a solid anchor on Mondays (along with the excellent Warehouse 13 - as long as it lasts with this corporate mindset), so of course the only logical thing to do is kill it. Right?

SciFi USED to stand for Science Fiction, but ever since it became SyFy there has been less and less SciFi. Fridays are gone. After Eurica is gone, all that will be left worth watching are Sanctuary and Warehouse13. You people are destroying a great and unique network! Wrestling, crap reality shows, fake supernatural shows and bad movies are making SyFy unwatchable. So yeah, good move - get rid of only your best shows. Losers!

I'm glad you will have time to do a proper farewell. It's hard to say goodbye. These characters warm our hearts deeply. To create a show such as this is tough work. To create a show like this and obtain the talent to pull it off, even harder. Eureka is a gem! The writers of the show know exactly what they are doing and the actors know exactly how to make us fall in love with them. Very few shows come close! You have touched my life with this tiny town of Eureka. To the writers, I thank you. To the cast, thank you for being our friends. Although fiction, it was a pleasure meeting all of these characters! I will miss the physical comedy that poor Jack had to endure. I will miss Fargo ALWAYS getting into mischief. I will miss the strong women in Eureka who make me want to do better in my own life. Cheers to the rest of this summer, and cheers for next year! I will always have the dvd's, so I can visit when I want ;o)

Thank you all, creators, producers, writers, cast and crew for such a wonderful show and summers full of great time with Eureka. Your show will be missed and it won't be forgotten!

Tear. Now I have nothing to look forward to in the summer. I was going to skip this show, but ever since the pilot, I have loved every episode. My heart is broken and I'm in a very bad mood. But alas, I own all the DVDs, so I'll get my fix. Just a sad sad day. Maybe it will live on, there is still a lot of time between now and the end. Here's hoping someone pulls their head out of there ass and at least gives us a movie or a conclusion. If it ends on a cliffhanger, someone will pay. Thank you for giving me a great show to love forever and share with my children when they grow up. It will be missed. A lot.

Thank you Jaime and every single person who work so hard to bring us the very best show on tv. You gave us a show with humor, heart, class and best of all brains. You never talked down to us and we all appreciate that more than any of you will ever know.
SyFy has made the biggest mistake they could ever make, it may take awhile but they will figure that out when they drive away all their viewers.
