I imagine myself old-style like "Old Spice," cooking freshly caught fish over the fire, whittling and making a tree my relief outpost, but in reality, no!

You forgot the 'I'll go camping when they build a five-star hotel in the middle of the woods with room service and pool boys cloned from George Clooney' option.

I grew up in and out of state parks in the midwest US. And even a few province parks around Lake Superior. Most of my camping these days is summer weekends at a friend's place or festivals. Coleman tent, air mattress, campfire and plenty of mead! Not primitive ala Charles Grant (but if the primitive camping trip includes Charles Grant, sign me up!), but not trying to recreate a modern house out in the woods. No laser, but one of the folks I camp with at festivals uses a solar panel to power up a few conveniences, and we have managed to have liquid nitrogen ice cream at our communal camp site!
